Bus Shelter and Bus Stop Redesign Project
WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT...
The Big Blue Bus is currently in the early phases of a bus stop redevelopment program to improve the customer information and amenities offered at bus stops around the city. Bus stops are a powerful marketing tool and act as a ‘store window’ for transit services. They are also an important platform for information including new real-time information signs that provide actual bus arrival times on computerized information boards. There are several key goals that this program will address including:
- Creating a safe, secure & welcoming place to congregate
- Developing a platform for both static and real-time transit information
- Designing street amenities that enhance the street-scape of the City

WHAT WILL BE AT THE BUS STOPS...
There are 328 bus stops within the Santa Monica City limits. Each stop has been assigned to one of four categories and based on the category, will receive certain amenities.

There are 48 high volume stops that have over 100 but less than 999 daily boardings, 38 medium volume stops that have between 99 and 49 daily boardings, and 237 lower volume stops with less than 50 daily boardings. In addition, there is one special high volume stop located at Pico at 18th Street with over 1,000 daily boardings. There are also 4 transit mall stops that already have existing shelters.
ABOUT THE NEW SHELTERS...
The bus stop redesign project will include new shelters at the high volume stops. There are many factors that will determine if a bus shelter can actually be placed on the street at the desired location and a study of each location will be conducted to determine if a shelter can be built at the needed location. The Big Blue Bus will begin a process to recruit an architectural firm in October of 2008 who will develop the design of the shelters, signs, and pole systems. The shelters will be designed with the following considerations:
- Create an enhanced streetscape
- A design that will take into account physical constraints of the streets
- Allow for maximum visibility to businesses and signage located behind it
- Will feature alternative energy when possible such as solar technology
- Will be as impervious to vandalism as is feasible.
- Offers easily readable and well-designed trip information
- Is simple and cost effective to maintain and service
- Adheres to ADA regulations
- Allows for the most current & future technologies
HOW TO GET INVOLVED…..
The process for the development of the bus stop redevelopment plan includes several ways for our customers and the public to offer comments and suggestions.
Phase one: Public notification of the master plan for the program and stop locations. Anyone wishing to comment can do so by sending an e-mail to Dan.Dawson@smgov.net or writing to Dan Dawson, Customer Relations Manager, Big Blue Bus, 1660 7th St, Santa Monica, CA 90401.
Phase two: Once the design/architectural firm has developed design concepts, a public outreach campaign will begin that will include e-mail, direct mailings, and several public meetings where the public can comment and provide input on the different designs.
Phase three: City Council will be reviewing possible designs in early 2009. The public is invited to go to the Council meeting and make comments.
