Patrons using Wheelchairs/Mobility Devices
If you are a person with a disability, please let staff know, as this will help our Operators and Customer Service staff better serve you. For riders, please note that all Big Blue Buses are equipped with lifts or ramps for wheelchair/mobility device patrons. Please follow these steps when using your device:
- Before boarding, please wait until other passengers have boarded and alighted. Position your wheelchair or mobility device at least three feet back from the curb, since the lift platform or ramp will extend approximately 18 inches. Please listen and carefully follow any instructions given by the Operator.
- If using wheelchair-lift equipment, roll your chair forward onto the lift when the Operator lowers the platform. Lock your wheelchair brakes. Once your chair is securely on the platform, the Operator will activate a safety barrier to prevent your chair from rolling backward off the lift. If bus is equipped with a ramp, simply roll your device forward and make your way to the wheelchair securement area located on the front of the bus.
- Before preparing to board, please wait until other passengers have boarded and alighted. Position your wheelchair at least three feet back from the curb, since the lift platform or ramp will extend approximately 18 inches from the curb. Please listen and carefully follow any instructions given by the driver.
- Once the lift has been activated, you will be raised to the level of the bus floor, where you can unlock your brakes and move off the lift.
- As you pay your fare, please tell the Operator the location where you want to alight so they can properly position the bus at your departure point. After paying your fare, proceed to the wheelchair securement area located in the front of the bus on the curb side. Turn your chair around and back into the securement clamp.
- Your device must be properly secured and brakes set before the driver can move the bus. A seat belt is also provided as an added securement measure. Please let the driver know if you need assistance in securing your wheelchair or fastening your seat belt.
- Please signal your departure approximately one block ahead of your stop by using the signal cord or tape located adjacent to the window.
- When it is clear, go to the front of the bus and wait for the Operator to raise the lift and activate the safety barrier if using a wheelchair-lift equipped bus. Carefully roll your device onto the lift facing out and lock your brakes. When the lift reaches the ground, the safety barrier will lower and you will be able to wheel away from the lift. If bus is equipped with a ramp, simply wheel forward after ramp has been placed on sidewalk and wheel away.
If you do not want your device secured on the bus, you must have your device screened to see if it qualifies for exemption by Customer Service staff at Blue: the Transit Store before riding the bus. Please call Customer Service at (310) 451-5444 to schedule a screening appointment.
